RE: Just got a call - they damaged our new truck in transit!

I agree don't listen to the hoopla. I have owned Chevy, GMC, Ford, and Dodge. Recently purchased a Ford F450 diesel. Love it. Pulls great, looks good has all the bells and whistles. My previous truck (which I still own, it's my hunting and hauling truck) is a l997 Dodge 2500 CTD. Also love that truck and have had only one very minor problem with vacuum which I fixed myself. Stll going strong after 11 years. Bottom line, in my opinion, is the best thing the big 3 do is build trucks and like the previous poster said it is just a matter of personal preference. For creature comforts, I like my Ford to pull the 5er. So again if you liked the F350 when you bought it, stay with it.

RE: Need to Pull an Old 70's 5th wheel

I am really in a pinch. I had purchased an older 70's model 5th wheel, and unfortunately the king pin is too short. No can seem to tow it - not even the guy who towed it 2x's previously. He says that it is just too short. Someone suggested that we just slide it in & wrap a chain on it. My hubby has a 97 pickup with a utility bed and low tool boxes. But we would have to install the hitch. Someone suggested an RV4 would do the job. Also a gooseneck adapter was suggested. I dont have a ton of money to do this - we are moving it a mile away to be put in a yard and sold. I dont know what to do - but I have to get it moved asap... Any suggestions would be great!! Christine Christine, find a farmer with a good sized tractor and a front end loader as suggested, pay him $50 and he can lift the front and get it moved for you. He will probably chain it down to the bucket to keep it from slipping but farmer's are always inventive and will come up with simple solutions to move heavy machinery--been doing it all their life. Only problem is liability to the trailer and/or property. You may have to get a moving company to do it for you that is bonded and assumes liability if that worries you. That would probably be $300-400. Personally, for a mile only I would trust my farmer friend. I do alot of tractor work but with a small tractor, to lift ~1500 lbs.(pin weight) is going to require a good sized front end loader.

Got my truck tricked out--finally!

Had a thread on here few months ago about truck boxes (tool boxes) for my F450. Ended up ordering a Delta Low Profile in black diamond plate. Was able to get one that was larger and designed to better fit in the Superduty-was shipped direct from factory. Secures in with two "J" hooks that I rubber coated. They hook under the lip of the bed so no holes to drill in new truck. It looks great and in tight turns have no clearance problems with 5er. The low profile only extends ~2" above bed rail. Only thing is used to be able to see my companion hitch from seat and mirror when hooking up trailer but that luxury is gone. May need to get small battery camera, paint a line on the box, or just trust the wife to guide me--haven't decided for sure yet. Anyway thanks for all the help with the original thread. Oh by the way, I looked at multiple boxes from Tractor Supply, Husky (Lowe's), etc. and really am very pleased with the Delta. The welds are great, lock is smooth so would highly recommend even though slightly more money.

RE: Grey tank drain problem

Mike, Had the same problem in my Keystone Cougar. Water backed up into kitchen sink. Before I started pulling plumbing, went and looked under the trailer and found another valve handle to the right of the sewer hookup which drained the galley grey water tank. Don't remember being shown this on walkthrough. But as other posters say you probably have two grey water tanks-one for kitchen and one for bathroom and shower.

Battery Charger/Conditioner

Have been looking at the BatteryMINDER charger to use on my 5er battery through the winter. I store under a shed but don't have electricity to 5er so must remove battery. With the BatteryMINDER can leave plugged in for months and can also put my boat starting battery on it in parallel. Won't boil out water. Any better ones out there?

RE: Travelling in Cold Weather

We are new to travelling in cold weather. We have a Montana 5th wheel with the "artic package". We understand and know how to winterize our trailer, but can you travel in cold weather? We plan to travel from Tennessee to Dallas Texas in November and December but what happens when the weather is below freezing temps? We already have below freezing temps predicted in Tennesse for this week. How do you travel with water in your tanks when the weather is below freezing? Can you? What do you have to do to protect your tanks? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We really want to take our rig and not stay in a hotel. Thank you very much! Williama1, We used to live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and now live in East Tennessee. Can't see any reason you would want to travel to Texas from Tennessee anyway. (Just kidding, lol)

RE: Does Fresh Water Tank Backfill

There is a check valve in your water pump that is faulty allowing water from the city water hook up to leak into your tank. Problem is you cannot just change the check valve. You need to change out the whole pump as it is internal to the pump. Had to do this last year. Thanks, that makes sense. Still under warranty so will take to dealer.

RE: Does Fresh Water Tank Backfill

I had the same situation. Never filled the tank but opened the drain and there was some "small amount" of water in there...today I noticed just above the tank fill there's a vent line with a screen on it and I wondered how much water might trickle in through it when I'm washing or when there's a windy storm etc. My tank was full so not water trickling in. Also when not in use 5er is inside so not rain either. Don't have valve in pump line that I could see but gonna put winterizing kit in tomorrow with valve so I can use pump for antifreeze. Guess I'll turn to off to prevent backfill.

Does Fresh Water Tank Backfill

Noticed when I was winterizing today, drained the low points and opened up my fresh water tank drain and it was full of water. I have never had a need to fill it since purchase of the trailer and had emptied it after sanitizing it at the first of the season. Can or does it backfill through the pump when connected to an outside water source?

RE: Different Tires on Same Make Trailer

I assume the same make was on a particular rig. Makes shouldn't be mixed up on the same RV. Yea, the same make was on each rig, but all were junk except maybe the Marathons (debatable). The Cardinals seemed to be a pretty good trailer and the ones we were viewing were in the 40-50 thousand range. Another 300 or so bucks on good tires would seem to me to make a lot of difference in "curb appeal". When they (the manufacturer's) go on the cheap for what you can see on the outside makes you wonder what they went on the cheap that you can't see. I know this topic has been talked about ad nauseum and don't want to open it up again just saw today in practice what this forum has complained about for a long time. Just wish some of the manufacturers would take heed 'cause they have to be reading what we're writing. Don't think there is any argument that the tow vehicles are getting better and if one 5er manufacturer broke away from the pack with a really good product, might corner the market. Oh, well enough ranting for now, think I'm just sour cause my 401k is down so much and won't be able to retire and go camping as much as I want.

Different Tires on Same Make Trailer

Was at local RV dealer in Tn today (actually at Camping World to get my winterizing supplies) but took a look at several of their 5ers. Was really surprised (maybe shouldn't have been) but saw five 2008 Cardinals all with different tires on them from Karriers, to Tow Masters, to Marthons. One with Missions. Surely these must come from different manufacturing sites? or maybe they just have a big pile and grab a set of whatever is available? Found it amusing.

RE: Keystone Cougar 318SAB

Have the 293 SAB and have really enjoyed it. Only issue was blowing in-line fuses in landing gear but dealer put automatic reset fuse and painted max extension and retraction lines on legs to keep me from going over limits. Gonna go out mid-november so will let you know 'bout cold weather in a Cougar.

RE: F450 hitch

Have a B&W turnover ball and Companion 5th Wheel Hitch. No problems so far. Companion very well made but costly.

RE: Front Landing Gear ?

Grizzlvr, I have a Cougar 293SAB and my dealer recently had to replace my "in line" 30 amp fuse with an automatic 30 amp reset fuse. It resets itself after it cools off. I had a similar problem blowing these fuses about every other time I put the landing gear up or down. The service tech (whom I trust greatly) told me he has had to replace a large number of these fuses. As another poster mentioned he said in his opinion it was caused from overextending or overretracting the landing legs and he actually painted lines on my legs to show me when to stop retracting and extending. He indicated almost all Keystone products have the "in line" fuse to the landing legs and mine was the tiny green auto fuse in a black flat container.
